Marie Noriega*

An enslaved woman in the household of Victoire Le Sassier, widow of Lt. Col. Jose Noriega.

Born between about 1786 and 1793. Race is recorded as Negro.

Appears in the Bill of Complaint for Divorce between Madame Victoire and her second husband, Don Pedro de Alba, Sr. Marie was listed among the property Mme. Le Sassier owned before her marriage to de Alba in 1813; she was described as being 27 years old, a cook and laundress.

In Victoire Le Sassier’s 1833 will, Marie and her son, Phillipe, were bequeathed to Victoire’s niece and daughter-in-law, Emilie Noriega Hubbell.

Deed of Manumission: 10 February 1838 – Emilie and her husband, Loring C. Hubbell, freed Marie in consideration of her “long and faithful service.” Marie was described as a negresse in this instrument, and as being about 45 years old. (Escambia Co. [FL] Deeds, F/380)
