Marcelino Adolfo Alba

A free male of color in Pensacola, Florida.

Born 6 April 1817 in Pensacola. Race is recorded as pardo.

Baptized on 31 July 1817 by Father James Coleman at St. Michael’s Parish (Spanish Pensacola). Mother was Gertrudis Alba, a free woman of color. Father was listed as unknown in baptismal record (this usually meant the father was unwilling or unable to acknowledge the child).

In the 1820 Spanish census of Pensacola, Adolfo can be found in the household of his mother, Gertrudis, a parda woman working as a seamstress. Also in the household are two free women of color whose relationship is not specified: Mariana Alba, a free negra woman who may be Gertrudis’ mother, and Genoveva Ham.

Gertrudis had at least one other child after the census, Maria Ana.
