Black female, born about 1860 in Mobile, Alabama. She died on 14 February 1896 on Intendencia Street in Pensacola, Florida. Her death certificate gave her age as 36 years old, and her occupation as laundress. She died of consumption. At the time of her death she was widowed, and had lived in the state for 15 years. Boykin Jones, J.P. and ex oficio Coroner, signed the death certficiate; S.B. Hutchinson buried in her in the Escambia County Poor Farm Cemetery.
Loodie’s death announcement and the Florida Death Index both identify her as “Toodie,” and while there is a strange jot on the “L” on her death certificate, it far more closely resembles the other “L’s” on the certificate than it does the “F,” which would presumably be similar to a “T.” I am convinced it is an “L.” The City death record also records her name as “Loodie.”
I had at one time identified this woman as Lucinda Mills Campbell, a mulatto woman, the widow of Eli Campbell. She was listed as residing on Intendencia Street in Pensacola in the 1885 City Directory. She was about the right age; the only discrepancy was that there was no evidence of a connection to Mobile, Alabama. I also could find no further records of Lucinda after 1896, leading me to believe she had indeed died. I abandoned this line of pursuit, though, when I found a death certficate for her mother, Jane Mills, who died in April 1896 and was buried in St. John’s cemetery. Her gravestone in St. John’s proudly notes that it was erected by her daughter, Lucinda Campbell. Loodie having died in February makes it impossible for her to have been Lucinda.
Research continues to find the correct woman.
