An enslaved woman in the household of Doña Maria Machado, the widow of Benito Caro.
Born about 1799. Race is recorded as negra.
Appears in her children’s baptismal records from St. Michael’s Parish (Spanish Pensacola): Francisco Venancio 1817 and Maria Juliana in 1819. In each record, the father of the children was listed as unknown in the baptismal records (this usually meant the father was unwilling or unable to acknowledge the child.)
Bill of Sale: 19 November 1835 – Sold by Maria Machado Caro to Merced Palmes (probably her daughter, Maria Merced Caro Palmes) for $500. Juana is described as a Negro woman about 36 years old. This was a mortgage; as soon as Maria paid the $500 back, ownership reverted back to Maria Machado Caro. (Escambia Co. [FL] Deeds, C/230)
