A girl of color enslaved in the household of Maria Vellon, a free woman of color in Pensacola, Florida.
Born 19 July 1817. Race is not recorded.
Baptized on 8 August 1817 by Father James Coleman at St. Michael’s Parish (Spanish Pensacola). Mother was Maria Susanah, a negra woman enslaved in the same household. Father was listed as unknown in baptismal record (this usually meant the father was unwilling or unable to acknowledge the child).
Deed of Manumisison: 27 February 1840 – Mary Vellon manumitted Josefa (called Josephine) for “natural love and affection.” References Josefa’s baptismal record to provide a birth date, but gives no other description. (Escambia Co. [FL] Deeds, G/162)
