John P. Anastas

White male, born about 1858 in Greece. His father was P. Anastas, and both he and John’s mother were also born in Greece. His death certificate identifies him as a Merchant, and that he had been in the city for 8 years at the time of his death. John died on 16 November 1928 at the Escambia County Poor Farm, where he was buried by T.M. Lloyd. He died of Parenchymatous nephritis, for which physician V.R. Nobles had been treating him since 1 November. The informant on his death certificate was T.P. Demitry of 1015 W. Garden St. No information on John’s marital status was given.

John P. Anastas appeared in The Pensacola News in October 1905, having purchased a county and state business license. He appears in the 1907 Pensacola City Directory as part-owner of J.P. Anastas & Co., which sold fruit and lunch at 319 S. Palafox. In the next year’s directory, John’s partner, Dmitry Cocorines, had taken over the business and Anastas was not listed. In fact, Anastas disappeared from Pensacola until 1924, when he again appeared in the newspaper in a list of business licensees. Then, nothing, until his death certificate.

There is a lone entry in 1910 in the Meridian, Mississippi City Directory for a John P. Anastas that sounds like him: fruit stand, residing at 109 22nd Ave. He did not appear in the 1908 or the 1911 directories for Meridian, however. He also does not appear in any U.S. Census that I have been able to find; though there is a strong possibility his name has been mistranscribed.

The informant on his death record was Theams P. Demitry (also spelled Dimitry), a merchant from Skopelos, Greece who lived in Pensacola for 65 years. There does not appear to be a family relationship that I can find.
