Black male, born about 1871 in Alabama, single at the time of his death. Parents were Alex and Maria Allen, both born in Virginia. Jack died of Chronic nephritis and chronic myocarditis at the age of 62 on 30 August 1933 at his residence at 117 N. Tarragona St., Pensacola, FL. His occupation was listed as labor, public work, which occupation he had held for 13 years. The informant on his death certificate was Susie Dennis, who lived at the same residence. Jack was buried in the Escambia County Poor Farm cemetery.
Jack appeared in the 1880 census for Hopewell, Lowndes Co., Alabama. His father, Alex was identified as being 70 years old, a farm laborer who could neither read nor write. He and both of his parents were born in South Carolina. Jack’s mother, Mariah, was 60 years old; she and both her parents were from Alabama. Other children in the household were Jack’s sisters Mittie (19), Elizabeth (17), Adona (14), Caslella (8), and Georgia (4). Jack had one brother, Charles B. (16). Jack himself was 11. All the children were born in Alabama. [70 and 60 years old for the parents is a bit old, given the ages of the children. One wonders if either the ages of Alex and Mariah were not correct, if they were actually the younger childrens’ grandparents, or if perhaps the younger children were adopted.]
