Gertrude first appeared in the Deed of Manumission (3 June 1826) of her children: Eusebia Angela, Dominga Mariana, and Valerio Baptist Bernardo. The father of all three of the children was Adelaide Petit’s son, Baptiste Bernardo. (Escambia Co. [FL] Deeds A/417)
Deed of Manumission: 28 February 1829 – Adelaide Petit manumitted Gertrude for $500 paid by her son, John Baptist Bernard. At that time, Gertrude had another child named Adelaide Bernard, 5 months old, who was included in the manumission. Gertrude was described as being about 30 years old at the time of the deed.
