Felonise Crespo*

An enslaved woman in the household of Doña Josefa Palmes, the widow Crespo.

Born about 1805. Race is recorded as negra.

Bill of Sale: 25 November 1823 – Doña Josefa sold Felonise to Juan de la Rua for $400. Name is spelled “Felonis” and she is described as being 18 years old, the same slave Doña Josefa purchased from the estate of her late husband, Vicente Crespo, in March of 1810 (Felonise would have been about 5 years old). Bill of Sale: 30 December 1823 – Juan de la Rua sells her (spelled “Felonis”) to Captain Richard Sands of the U.S. 4th Infantry (then stationed in Pensacola) for $425. She is again described as 18 years old. (Escambia Co. [FL] Deeds, A/139)

Bill of Sale: 2 November 1826 – Captain Sands sells her to Thomas Wright, Paymaster for the U.S. Army, for $400. Her name is spelled “Felonise” and she is described as 18 years old, despite the passage of 3 years since the last time she was described thus. (Escambia Co. [FL] Deeds, A/447)

Bill of Sale: 15 March 1827 – Thomas Wright sells her to John Campbell for $375. She is described as 20 years old. (Escambia Co. [FL] Deeds, A/481)
