Creola Banks Hogan Jackson

Black female, born about 1920 in Conecuh County, AL. Daughter of Rufus Banks and Nettie Lou Brown.

Creola first entered my research as the mother of an unnamed child who was born prematurely and died after an hour in 1937, Pensacola, FL. The father was unnamed.

Creola was apparently born too late for the 1920 census of Conecuh County, AL (dated January 1920), as only her sister (perhaps half-sister?), Lois, was enumerated in the household of Rufus and Nettie Lou. Creola was first enumerated in the 1930 Census of Mixons, Conecuh Co. She was called “Ola” in the census, and she was 10 years old. Her father, Rufus, was a farmer, 34 years old, and was apparently unable to read and write. Nettie was 32. (Lois was not in the household that year; she may have been living with her grandparents.)

Creola’s whereabouts in the 1930s are as yet unknown. Her parents appared in the 1938 Pensacola City Directory, living at 313 E. Mallory St. Rufus was a laborer.

A marriage record for Escambia County, FL shows Creola married Thomas Hogan 6 May 1940. Creola appears in the 1942 Pensacola Directory living in her parents’ house at 1709 N. Alcaniz St., working as a waiter. Thomas is not in the directory, that I could find. (His WWII draft card from 1940 shows him living at 216 E. Mallory St., and he lists Nettie rather than Creola as his next-of-kin.)

I have also been unable to locate Creola in the 1940 census. At some point, she married a man named Jackson as the record of her death on 16 October 1952 shows her as Creola Jackson, daughter of Rufus Banks and Nettie Lou Brown. She died in Tuskegee, AL, as did her father and mother, but her final resting place is unknown to me.
