Ana Pol*

A free woman of color who shared the household of Antonio Pol in Spanish Pensacola.

Born around 1774 in Louisiana. Race is recorded as negra.

The 1820 Spanish census of Pensacola lists Ana as a servant. Antonio was a pulpero, which can be translated as “grocer” or “tavern keeper.” He was born in Spain.

Antonio and Ana may have been living as husband and wife; couples of mixed ethnicity were quite common in Spanish West Florida. But they were not legally married, and she may or may not have used his surname.
