An enslaved woman in the household of Jose Ortiz in Spanish Pensacola. Ortiz was a shopkeeper from Spain; he shared a household with a free woman of color named Genoveva.
Race is recorded as mulata.
Appears in the 1817 and 1820 baptismal records of her daughters, Margarita Estaquia and Luisa Anastacia, from St. Michael’s Parish (Spanish Pensacola). Maria Estaquia was born enslaved, but Luisa Anastacia is referred to as a niña libre (free child) in her record. The father is not mentioned in Maria Estaquia’s record and he is listed as unknown in Luisa Anastacia’s; in each case this usually meant the father was unwilling or unable to acknowledge the child.
