Aaron Boland

Black male, born about 1857 in Alabama. He died 8 October 1897 in Pensacola, Florida at the age of 40. He was single at the time of his death, and his occupation was listed as “Cripple.” Both his parents were born in Alabama, and he had been in the state for 14 years. His cause of death was General Debility, and he was buried in the Escambia County Poor Farm by S.B. Hutchinson. The informant on his death record was Boylen Jones, Coroner.

His death notice in The Pensacola News leaves out an age, and gives his cause of death as “general debility, caused by injury.” This may mean that whatever caused his disability was fairly recent.

I have been unable to locate a trace of this man in either Alabama or Florida prior to his death. This leads me to believe his name might be inaccurately rendered – the entry was in the City death ledger, which was apparently copied by a clerk from a death certificate that is no longer extant – or someone (perhaps even him) provided an incorrect name. The fact that his death was unattended by a physician, and was, in fact, declared by the Coroner, points to his being in reduced circumstances at the time of his passing.
