Clara Serra*

An enslaved woman in the household of Don Ygnacio Serra in Pensacola, Florida.

Born around 1798 in Africa. Race is recorded as negra.

Baptized on 8 October 1818 by Father James Coleman at St. Michael’s Parish (Spanish Pensacola). At that time, her age was estimated at about 20 years. There is no information on her parents in the record.

According to the 1820 Spanish census of Pensacola, Ygnacio Serra was a civil servant born in Spain. His household included his wife and four children. (Enslaved people were not enumerated in this census.)
