Fania Ruby*

An enslaved woman in the household of Maria Carlota Ruby, a free woman of color in Spanish Pensacola.

Race is not recorded.

Named in Maria Carlota’s 1823 will, with the caveat that Fania had run away (hallarse Marona, or become a maroon) seven years earlier and her status was unknown; if she were found, she was to be considered part of Maria Carlota’s estate. The will was not recorded in its entirety by the clerk as apparently the original had several torn places, but there does not appear to have been a specific bequest of Maria Carlota’s slaves; rather, her entire estate was to be divided among her heirs.
