Carlota Ruby*

An enslaved woman in the household of Salvador Ruby, a free man of color, in Pensacola, Florida.

Race is recorded as negra.

Appears in the 1820 baptismal record of her daughter, Maria Andrea, from St. Michael’s Parish (Spanish Pensacola). Maria Andrea was baptized free, and Salvador Ruby signs to confirm the child’s freedom. The father was listed as unknown in baptismal record (this usually meant the father was unwilling or unable to acknowledge the child).

Named in the 1823 will of Maria Carlota Ruby, the free woman of color who was Salvador’s consort and inherited his property upon his death. This will has several places where it was torn and not able to be recorded by the clerk, but there does not appear to be a specific bequest of the slaves she owned; rather, her estate was to be divided among her children.
