Maria Rosa Garcia*

A free woman of color in thehousehold of Benito Garcia in Spanish Pensacola.

Born about 1783 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Benito Garcia was a pulpero, which can be translated as either “grocer” or “tavern keeper.” He was from Galicia, Spain.

There were three children in the household at the time of the 1820 Spanish census of Pensacola, all identified as pardo and all born in Louisiana. They are quite likely the children of Maria Rosa and Benito – families of mixed ethnicity were quite common in Spanish West Florida. But they were almost certainly not legally married, and she may or may not have used his surname.

FAMILY:

Children: Josefa Garcia, Desiderio Garcia, Remigio Garcia

Father of children: Benito Garcia (presumed)
