An enslaved boy in the household of Don Pedro de Alba.
Born 20 November 1818. Race is not recorded.
Baptized 9 December 1818 by Father James Coleman at St. Michael’s Parish (Spanish Pensacola). Mother was listed as Maria Rosa, a negra woman enslaved in the same household. Father was listed as unknown in baptismal record (this usually meant the father was unwilling or unable to acknowledge the child.)
In 1831, he was listed as surety in a mortgage instrument between Peter Alba, Sr.; Constanza Tala (his wife); and Peter Alba, Jr. (their son) and Francisco Commyns. The mortgage was satisfied in 1832, so Felix remained the property of the Albas. He was called only “Felix” in the instrument, and was identified as a Negro boy of 11 years of age. [Escambia County, Florida Deed Book B, page 344, dated 13 July 1831.]
He was again used as surety for a mortgage in 1833, between Pedro de Alba and Felipe Lamas. The mortgage was satisfied in 1834. [Escambia County, Florida Deed Book B, page 517, dated 21 November 1833.] He was identifed as being 12 years old.
Maria Rosa, Luis Laureano, and Luis Felix, are all listed in the 1835 will of Don Pedro de Alba among the property he left to his grandson, Juan de Alba.
He was used as surety for a mortgage in 1839 between John de Alba and Francisco Moreno. The mortgage was satisfied in 1840. [Escambia County, Florida Deed Book G, page 96, dated 12 September 1839.] He was identified as a Negro boy of black complexion, about 16 years old.
Felix’s mother and brother were sold to Zenon Suchet on 1 October 1839. They were identified as Marie Rose, aged about 40; and Lauranio, a mulatto aged about 19. They were among six slaves sold to Suchet for “the use and benefit of [John de Alba’s] wife, Eugenie Suchet de Alba.” [Escambia County Deed Book G, page 104, dated 1 October 1839].
Felix was sold to Zenon Suchet on 30 October 1839 for $102. He was described as a Negro boy of about 16 years of age, of black complexion. (The deed acknowledged that he was still encumbered by the mortgage of September 1839.) [Escambia County, Florida Deed Book G, page 104, dated 30 October 1839.]
