Mitt Cole

Black female, born about 1875 in Florida. She was 24 years old, single, and working as a laundress at the time of her death on 11 AUG 1899 in Pensacola, FL. Neither of her parents were named in her death record, but they were both from Florida. She died of consumption and was buried by Pou & Robinson in the Escambia County Poor Farm cemetery. Her death notice appeared in The Pensacola News on 19 AUG 1899 (p. 5) but gives no further details.

Mitt appeared a few more times in the Pensacola newspapers because of run-ins with the law: She was arrested on 12 AUG 1887 for fighting and fined $2 (The Pensacola Commercial, 12 AUG 1887, p. 4); and again on 25 SEP 1888 for assault with a knife. For this crime, she was sent to criminal court. (The Pensacola Commercial, 25 SEP 1888, p. 4) In The Pensacola News for 3 AUG 1889 (p. 4) we see Mittie Cole “placed under bond by Judge Maura to keep the peace for a year.”

She appeared in the 1898 Pensacola City Directory as Mittie Cole, a laundress residing at 123 West Intendencia St. in Pensacola.
