Black female, stillborn on October 13, 1937, in Pensacola, FL. The place of death was Pensacola Hospital; the residence was listed as 24 N. Tarragona Street in Pensacola. Her mother was Georgia Callaway, born in Alabama. The father was listed as “D.K.” [Don’t Know], though there may have been reasons other than ignorance for not naming the father. The informant on the death certificate was Willie Callaway, also a residence at 24 N. Tarragona St. The physician was W.E. Anderson. The child was buried in the Escambia County Poor Farm by Morris Funeral Home on 15 October 1937.
I have located a Georgia Callaway in the 1938 Pensacola City Directory, a woman of color living at 108 E. Belmont. There was no occupation given and no way to confirm this is the correct Georgia Callaway. I cannot find this woman, nor Willie Callaway, living on Tarragona St.
While I am able to locate several Georgia Callaways (var.: Calloway) who were women of color and how might be of childbearing age, living or having been born in Alabama, without further information I cannot verify the correct identity of the mother of this child. I have not identified Willie Callaway or his/her relationship to Georgia.
