William Butler

Black male, died in Pensacola, Florida, at about the age of 53 on 3 August 1902, of pneumonia. He was born in Georgia. William was married and worked as a laborer at the time of his death. His death was attended by J.H. Pierpont; John G. Wood, undertaker, buried him in the Escambia County Poor Farm cemetery.

There is no indication on William’s death record as to how long he had been in the city at the time of his death, and no information on any family members. Thus, it is impossible to identify him among the many William Butlers of about the right age who appear in Georgia records between 1850 and 1903. There was one William Butler in the Pensacola City Directory of 1903, who also appeared in the 1905 City Directory with the same address and occupation, ruling him out. The two widows Butler who appear in the 1903 and 1905 directories have been verified to have been married to another man. There is no William Butler in the 1900 federal census for Escambia County, Florida.

Any new information will be posted upon discovery.
