Edward L. Armstrong

White male, born in May 1848 in Charleston, South Carolina. His father was Luke Armstrong, born in New York; his mother was Rebecca, born in South Carolina. He died on 5 December 1930 in Pensacola, FL at the age of 82. Edward was single and his occupation at the time of his death was retired lumber inspector. He died at his residence, 312 W. Main St., where he lodged in a house run by Beatrice Domingos. She was the informant on the death certificate. The death certificate indicates Edward had been in the city for 13 years, but this does not seem to be the case. Edward’s cause of death was “undetermined, probably due to apoplexy.” He was buried in the Escambia County Poor Farm cemetery.

[Note: There were two Edward Armstrongs in Pensacola around this time. The other was Edward B. Armstrong, a bookkeeper, married to Jennie.]

In the 1900 census, Edward was listed as E.L. Armstrong. He was 52 years old and single. His occupation was sawmill hand.

Edward L. was enumerated in the 1910 census, in Freeport, Walton County, Florida. He was 62 years old at the time, single, and he worked as a laborer. The industry he worked in is left blank, but several of his neighbors worked in a saw mill. Given his work history, it is likely that he worked at that same saw mill.

Edward appears in the Pensacola City Directories from 1921 until 1931 (the 1931 edition must have been finalized before his death in December 1930). In 1921, he is listed as a sawyer, living at 504 1/2 S. Palafox. This was a boarding house run by Joseph and Beatrice Domingos. In 1924, he is living at the same address, his occupation listed as “checker.” In 1927 he has moved to 312 W. Main St., another boarding house run by Beatrice Domingos. He was a laborer. In 1931, Edward’s residence is 312 W. Main, also the residence of Beatrice Domingos, Joseph R. Domingos, Jr., and Thelma Domingos. Joseph R. Domingos (Sr.) ran the boarding house at 504 1/2 S. Palafox.
