A free woman of color in Pensacola, Florida.
Born around 1755 in Louisiana. Race is recorded as Negro.
Appears in the 1820 Spanish census of Pensacola in the household of Cristobal Ariolo, a carpenter from Italy. Also in the household is a younger negra woman named Dorotea and four young pardo children (Cristobal, Bautista, Josefa, and Rosa) who are described as “their children” without explicitly naming the mother. It could be that Elena is Dorotea’s mother and therefore the children’s grandmother, or all five younger members of the household might be Elena’s children. More research is needed.
