Catarina

A free woman of color in Pensacola, Florida.

Race is recorded as morena (mixed race) and quarterona (quadroon).

She appears in the 1817 baptismal record of her daughter, Juana Matilde, from St. Michael’s Parish (Spanish Pensacola). Father was listed as unknown in baptismal record (this usually meant the father was unwilling or unable to acknowledge the child).

She also appears in the 1820 baptismal record of Bernarda, also with an unknown father. I believe this woman to be the mother of both daughters, as there were few enough free women of color in Pensacola at the time that it would be unusual for to be identified only by a first name if there were more than one Caterina.

Without a surname, and without Catarina being listed as the head of her own household in 1830 or 1840, it is difficult to identify her or her daughters after 1820.
